BlueCross BlueShield Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac Care®
The national BlueCross BlueShield Association has recognized Saint Mary’s Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac Care®.
Saint Mary’s is one of just two hospitals in Connecticut to achieve the Blue Distinction Centers+ designation for Cardiac Care along with St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Two other hospitals in the state─St. Vincent’s Hospital and Stamford Hospital─were recognized as Blue Distinction Centers for Cardiac Care.
The goal of the Blue Distinction program “is to help consumers find both quality and value for their specialty care needs, on a consistent basis, while encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care nationwide,” Blue Cross and Blue Shield says on its website.
“Research shows that Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications following certain cardiac procedures and lower rates of healthcare associated infections compared with their peers,” the website says. “Blue Distinction Centers+ are also 20 percent more cost-efficient than non-designated hospitals for those same cardiac procedures.”
To qualify for this additional distinction, “hospitals must meet the same quality criteria as Blue Distinction Centers, and go an extra step to demonstrate that they do so cost efficiently. Quality is key: only those facilities that first meet Blue Distinction’s nationally established, objective quality measures will be considered for designation as a Blue Distinction Center+,” according to Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
